1924 Negro League World Series

Kansas City Monarchs defeated Philadelphia Hilldales 5 to 4

The first Negro League World Series found the Kansas City Monarchs, of the Negro National League, managed by Jose Mendez, playing against the Philadelphia Hilldales, of the Eastern Colored League. Jose Mendez made three pitching appearances, with two wins, for the Monarchs even though he recently had surgery and was ordered by his doctors not to play. Mendez inserted himself as a reliever in game seven, winning the 12 inning marathon, and game nine. He started the tenth and deciding game with the series tide at 4 games apiece. Mendez pitched a three hit shutout, and the Monarchs were crowned champions. With two wins and a 1.42 ERA, Mendez was selected as the series MVP.

1925 Negro League World Series

Philadelphia Hilldales defeated the Kansas City Monarchs 5 to 1

Jose Mendez manages the Kansas City Monarchs to its third straight Negro National League penant. the Monarchs defeated the St. Louis Stars in the playoffs but lost to the Hilldales in the second Negro League World Series. Mendez made an appearance in game three and earned the loss.

1945 Negro League World Series

Cleveland Buckeyes defeated the Homestead Grays 4 to 0

Playing short stop for the Cleveland Buckeyes was Avelino Caņizares. He batted only .200 but his sharp defense was a valuable contributor to the Buckeyes dominance.

1947 Negro League World Series

New York Cubans defeated Cleveland Buckeyes 4 to 1

The New York Cubans, owned by Alex Pompez and managed by Jose Maria Fernandez, had among its players: Lorenzo Cabrera, Silvio Garcia, Orestes "Minnie" Miņoso, Claro Duany, Cleveland Clark, Pedro Pages, Ray Noble, Luis Tiant, and Lino Donoso. In game four Ray Noble hit a grand slam. Game five was won by Lino Donoso, who allowed only 2 runs on 7 hits. Luis Tiant, in his last season, started game 6. Orestes "Minnie" Miņoso led hitters with 11 hits and a .423 batting average. Claro Duany, batted .421, Ray Noble, batted .400, Silvio Garcia, batted .389, and Lorenzo Cabrera, batted .316, for the potent Cubans.
