November 29, 2002 IOC officials elected to postpone the vote to remove baseball as a gold medal sport in the Olympics until after the 2004 games.

November 23, 2002 The Central-American and Caribbean games began today in El Salvador with the absence of the Cuban delegation. Cuba cited security concerns as their reason for not attending.

November 22, 2002 The Yankees purchased the contract of Michel Hernandez and added him to the 40 man roster.

November 8, 2002 The XV Intercontinental Cup began play in Cuba. Group A: China, Cuba, Japan, Holland, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Group B: Brazil, Taiwan, Italy, Korea, Mexico and Panama. In the first game Cuba defeated Holland 5 to 0.

November 7, 2002 Team Cuba defeated the Chunichi Dragons for a second time 4-3.

October 27, 2002 The Anaheim Angels, with Alex Ochoa and Orlando Palmeiro, have won the World Series. Livan Hernandez got the loss for the Giants... Alex Cabrera, of the Seibu Lions, hit 2 run homer in the second game of the Japan Series.

October 17, 2002 The Boston Red Sox signed Hansel Izquierdo to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training... On November 5 & 6 the Chunichi Dragons, of the Japanese Professional League, will play a pair of games against the Cuban National Team in Havana.

October 7, 2002 Several players of Cuban heritage are headed to the Championship series. The Giants have Livan Hernandez; the Cardinals have Eli Marrero, Eduardo Perez and Fernando Vina and the Angels have Alex Ochoa and Orlando Palmeiro...Both Team Cuba and Team USA won their semifinal games at the Americas tournament and will face each other in the finals...Pitcher Jose Ariel Contreras and coach Miguel Valdez are in San Diego after defecting in Mexico... Islay Molina received a new contract from the Rochester Red Wings (Twins) AAA.

October 6, 2002 Livan Hernandez goes 8 innings and allows only 3 runs to get the victory over the Braves.

October 5, 2002 Fernando Vina goes 2 for 4 and scores a run and batted in one run to help the Cardinals beat Arizona and move on to the NL Championship Series. Vina went 9 for 15 (.600) in the Divisional Series. The Angels will also move on to the AL Championship series after they defeated the Yankees... The Mets activated Jorge Toca from the 60 day DL.

October 3, 2002 Fernando Vina goes 4 for 5 for the Cardinals... The Marlins release pitcher Hansel Izquierdo.

October 2, 2002 Cuban National team pitching ace Jose Ariel Contreras was reported missing and may have defected at the Americas Series Baseball tournament in Mexico...Mike Lowell, 3rd baseman of the Marlins, was named NL player of the week...The Yankees optioned pitcher Adrian Hernandez to Triple-A Columbus.

October 1, 2002 Fernando Vina goes 3 for 6 and scores two runs to help the Cardinals beat Arizona.

September 30, 2002 Several players of Cuban heritage were among the league leaders this season. Rafael Palmeiro fished 3rd in the AL in HRs with 43, Mike Lowell finished 2nd in doubles in the NL and Alex Sanchez finished 5th in steals with 37 in the NL.

September 28, 2002 Several players of Cuban heritage are headed to the playoffs. The Giants have Livan Hernandez; the Cardinals have Eli Marrero, Eduardo Perez and Fernando Vina; the Yankees have Orlando Hernandez and Jorge Posada and the Angels have Alex Ochoa and Orlando Palmeiro.

September 27, 2002 The Cuban National team and Team USA both will compete in the Americas Series Baseball tournament beginning today in Mexico. The top 9 teams will qualify for the 2003 Pan-American games... Tony Perez will assume the role of Special Assistant to Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

September 25, 2002 Livan Hernandez pitches a complete game, 2 hit, shutout against the Padres.

September 24, 2002 Luis Mike Lowell connected two HRs and drove in 4 runs for the Marlins.

September 23, 2002 Luis Gonzalez injured his shoulder in an outfield collision and will miss the rest of the season... A group of leaders from Major League Baseball will travel to meet with IOC officials in an effort to convince them not to remove baseball as a gold medal sport in the Olympics. The IOC plans to remove baseball beginning with the 2008 Summer games.

Jorge Posada reached base 4 times and added a HR and 2 RBIs to lead the Yankees over the Rangers. The Pirates sign Ariel Prieto to a Minor League contract.

July 28, 2002 The Baseball Reliquary elected Orestes "Minnie" Minoso to its Shrine of the Eternals hall of fame.

July 24, 2002 Alex Sanchez goes 4 for 5 with 3 Runs and 2 RBIs for the Brewers.

July 23, 2002 Danys Baez held the Yankees scoreless over 8 innings and Ricky Guitierez went 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs for the Indians. In the same game Jorge Posada had to leave after being hit in the head by a bat. He was taken to the hospital with a lacerated ear but would be OK... Omar Linares makes his debut Chunichi Dragons. He had a two run single to score the go ahead runs.

July 22, 2002 Luis Gonzalez goes 2 for 2 with a HR and 4 RBIs... Raul Ibanez is selected AL co-player of the week... In a ceremony at Fenway Park Luis Tiant was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame.

July 21, 2002 Pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez drops appeal and starts serving 5 day suspension...Raul Ibanez batted .350 with 23 RBIs in his last 10 games.

July 20, 2002 Pitcher Agustin Marquetti is reinstated from the disable list by the Erie Seawolves (AA Tigers). Tony Taylor was enshrined into the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame.

July 19, 2002 Pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez is fined and suspended for 5 games for intentionally hitting Carlos Delgado with a pitch. El Duque is appealing the suspension.

July 17, 2002 Luis Gonzalez went 3 for 5 with a HR, 2 Runs, 1 SB and 5 RBIs.

July 14, 2002 The Red Sox reinstate Rolando Arrojo from the 15 day DL.

Omar Linares will play for the Chunichi Dragons, Orestes Kindelan and Antonio Pacheco will play with the Ameteur team Sidas. Luis Ulacia and German Mesa will coach... The first "Super Liga del beisbol Cubano" began today. Made up of 4 teams with 100 players selected from the National Series: Centrales, Habaneros, Occidentales and Orientales.

July 5, 2002 We mourn the passing of baseball legend Ted Williams. He will be missed by all baseball fans... Pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez joined the Fresno Grizzlies (San Francisco Giants)... Infielder Carlos Castillo is tranferred from the Lakeland Tigers (A) to the Erie Seawolves (AA Tigers).

July 2, 2002 The Indians re-instate Ricky Gutierrez from the 15-day DL.

July 1, 2002 Pitcher Michael Tejera collected 9 strikeouts in 7 innings and went 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs to lead the Marlins to a 11- victory over the Cubs... Pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez was released by the Ottowa Lynx (Montreal) per his own request.

June 30, 2002 Jorge Posada will be the AL starting catcher at the All-Star game. Mike Lowell and Luis Gonzalez were named reserves for the NL squad.

June 28, 2002 Jorge Posada homered from both sides of the plate and drove in 5 runs to propel the Yankees to victory.

June 25, 2002 Pitcher Hansel Izquierdo is sent down to Triple A Calgary by the Marlins and Juan Diaz is sent to Triple A Pawtucket by the Red Sox... Cardinals minor leaguer William Ortega has been suspended indefinitely by the Pacific Coast League for going into the opposing team's clubhouse and assaulting pitcher Adam Johnson. Johnson had plunked Ortega in retaliation for a spikes-up slide Ortega had made at second base, which opened up a cut on Jay Canizaro.

June 23, 2002 Juan Diaz went 1-1 as a pinch hitter and hits his first major league home run for the Boston Red Sox... The Lincoln Saltdogs, Northern League, activated catcher Alexis Hernandez.

April 30, 2002 Mike Lowell, of the Marlins, went 4-5 bringing his major league leading average to .385. Mike also leads the majors in hits (40) and doubles (15)...Rafael Palmiero hit his 453rd HR to move into sole possession of the 25th spot on the all-time list.

April 24, 2002 Rafael Palmiero hit his 452nd HR to tie Carl Yastrzemski for 25th on the all-time list... The Detroit Tigers signed a pair of Cubans, Pitcher Agustin Marquetti and SS Carlos Castillo, to minor league contracts.

April 6, 2002 Orlando Hernandez pitches 8 innings of one hit shutout ball to win his first start of the season for the New York Yankees...Eli Marrero needed just a single to hit for the cycle. He went 3 for 4 with HR, Triple and Double.

January 4, 2002 Adrian Zabala died of a heart attack in Jacksonville, Florida. He was 85 years old. He pitched for 17 years in the Cuban League and two seasons with the New York Giants. He was elected to the Cuban Hall of Fame in 1984.
