In 1925 as part of the traditional American Series, that pitted Cuban teams versus teams visiting from the US, a squad of All-Americans
faced an All-Cubans team for a set of 8 games. The All-Americans, also called the Yankees, filled their roster with some of the best Negro League players of the time. They faced an All-Star team of Cubans, also called the Criollos.
It was not even close. The All-Americans won 5 and lost only 2 with one game ending in a tie. Managing the All-Americans was John H. (Pop) Lloyd who also played first base. The All-Cubans were co-managed by Adolfo Luque and Miguel
Angel Gonzalez, both players were under a ban on Winter Ball play. The order had come from Judge Landis who was visiting Cuba at the time. |
