Orlando Palmeiro to a two-year contract. U.S. congressman Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart requsted that Cuban players in the U.S. be allowed to form a team and participate in the WBC instead of the Cuban team composed of only players from Cuba. The Philadelphia Phillies acquired Gio Gonzalez from the Chicago White Sox.
