Much has been written about the Ciudad Trujillo Dragons and the 1937 Dominican League Championship. Little, though, has been written about the contribution of the Cuban players that filled the rosters of all three teams.
Ciudad Trujillo won the Championship with one of the strongest teams in the combined histories of the Latin and Negro Leagues.
Team W L Ciudad Trujillo 18 13 Aguilas Cibaeņas 13 15 Estrellas Orientales 11 14
Negro League historians usually focus on the contributions of Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell. Almost no mention is made to the fact that Ciudad Trujillo was managed by Lazaro Salazar, who also played first base, outfield, and pitched. The team also included in its roster the following Cubans: Rodolfo Fernandez, Rafael Quintana, Miguel Solis, Silvio Garcia, Francisco Correa, Jose Vargas, and Tony Castaņo.
The Estrellas Orientales were managed by Catcher Julio Rojo and included the following Cubans in its roster: Ramon Bragana, Yoyo Diaz, Cocaina Garcia, Rogelio Teheran, Carlos Blanco, Javier Perez, Pedro Arango and Alejandro Oms. The Aguilas Cibaeņas had Martin Dihigo, Luis Tiant and Santos Amaro among others.
To further ilustrate the Cuban presense listed below are the hitting leaders:
