1909 Cabaņas Cards:
Teams Featured: Almendares, Habana and Detroit Tigers Cards are Black and White Colorized Red (Habana), Blue (Almendares), and Brown (Tigers). Cards measure 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" - 35 known cards in the set with two versions of the Heliodoro Hidalgo card. Checklist and images below.
In November of 1909 the Detroit Tigers visited the island of Cuba and played 12 games. They caused a big stir among Cubans, who were by this time huge baseball fans. Detroit came without Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford and suffered several embarrassing losses at the hands of the integrated Cuban baseball teams. Detroit played 12 games and won only 4. To take advantage of the craze the Cabaņas Company decided to start printing the cards, which may have started coming out in late 1909.
The Detroit roster, from a game played on November 18, 1909, consisted of the following players: D. Jones, C. O'Leary, G. Moriarty, M. Mcintyre, C. Schmidt, G. Mullin, H. Beckendorf, R. Hopke, and W. Lelivelt. The Almendares roster consisted of A. Marsans, A. Cabaņas, G. Gonzalez, J. Castillo, R. Almeida, H. Hidalgo, A. Cabrera, E. Pedroso, and R. Valdes.
In addition to the players listed above the Almendares team also had Alfredo Cabrera, Esteban Prats, Regino Garcia, Carlos Royer, Jose Mendez, and Joseito Muņoz. Habana had in its roster the following players: Preston Hill, Bruce Petway, Emilio Palomino, Agustin Parpeti, Luis Padron, Gonzalo Sanchez, Luis Bustamante, Inocencio Perez, Ricardo Hernandez, Agustin Molina, Pastor H. Pareda, Angel Mesa, Carlos Moran, Valentin Gonzalez, and Luis Gonzalez.
